Case Vilademany Foundation: iLOQ S5 keeps elderly residents safe and secure

The iLOQ S5 digital locking solution combines easy access with high security to help make life accessible for residents, staff and visitors.

The Vilademany Foundation provides a day center, sheltered housing and assisted living facilities for the elderly in the town of Taradell, Spain.

The safety and well-being of residents are priorities for the Foundation’s management. It was vital, therefore, to find a locking solution that combined easy access, so that more capable residents felt they could enter and leave freely, with high security, to restrict the movements of more vulnerable residents. The Foundation found the ideal solution with the iLOQ S5 digital locking system.

Director of the Vilademany Foundation, Lluís Verdaguer, explains the flexibility of iLOQ S5 where locks and Online readers can be accessed using both the digital iLOQ key, that incorporates an NFC antenna, and standard RFID cards:

“On the one hand, we want to make the residence a totally open space. But on the other hand, some of our elderly residents require a lot of security and very strict access control. We need to make sure that the right people can get in and move around freely, but we need to be very careful about who has access to potentially hazardous areas (like laundry rooms and medicine cabinets) and who can get out”.

With iLOQ S5, a digital key or a code for the Online door reader is provided to the relatives of the residence so that they can enter whenever they wish. When leaving the property, there is a sign with an instruction next to the doors that have an exit control code. For example: enter the current year. Residents with cognitive impairments would find it difficult to answer that question and are therefore prevented from leaving the premises.

Mr Verdaguer explains another major benefit of the system:

“Undoubtedly, iLOQ S5 has increased the security of the center. In addition, the cylinders do not need batteries. With so many access points, this creates long-term savings.”

With iLOQ S5, doors can be unlocked quickly and simply by holding a key close to the Online reader. This reduces direct contact with surfaces which has helped to protect staff, residents and visitors against the spread of COVID-19. At the moment, staff in the center wear personal protective equipment at all times, which could make it difficult for them to find and use their keys. However, they have developed an ingenious way of keeping their digital key handy without spending too much time looking for it.
