Modern solutions securing a zoo with a rich history

DierenPark Amersfoort is a family-run zoo in the Netherlands that was founded in 1948. In 2017, it achieved the milestone of attracting one million visitors, and, this year, it is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Security is extremely important to ensure a smooth experience for employees and visitors, and to keep the animals safe and well cared for.

In the summer of 2020, the zoo decided to upgrade its security system to iLOQ’s battery-free digital locking solution. At the moment, they have around 90 cylinders on the enclosures for the animals, such as lions and elephants, and five Online readers at the main entrance and the gates. Approximately 180 keys have been programmed.

With iLOQ’s solution, all access rights are programmed to one digital key, so employees no longer need to carry around large bunches of keys. Their access rights can be easily updated as new facilities are added and quickly blocked if a key is lost.

Sustainability is also important to the zoo, another reason why they opted for iLOQ’s battery-free solution which is currently saving more than 100,000 kg of unrecyclable battery waste every year – the equivalent of about 36 Asian elephants!

“iLOQ’s solution saves us a lot of time, effort and costs related to wiring. And it is very easy to program new keys with limited access rights or issue PIN codes for the readers – which is particularly useful when we have a large number of seasonal workers,” states Clemont Struik, Safety and Environment Coordinator at DierenPark Amersfoort.
