About the customer
Cellnex Telecom is a large European company with around 130,000 base stations across the continent.
At the end of 2020, iLOQ signed a long-term framework agreement to be one of the favored priority suppliers of access management solutions for Cellnex’s network of telecom masts and datacenters. From the beginning of 2021, the deployment of iLOQ products accelerated throughout Europe. And, by the end of 2022, Cellnex had deployed 40,000 locks in 36,000 sites.
In Sweden, Cellnex Sverige has more than 3,000 base stations located throughout the country.
About the project
Because Cellnex Telecom’s masts and data centers are used by Cellnex personnel and many different sub-contractors, the company needed to find a secure and innovative way of handling access management.
The main challenge with the old mechanical locks was the number of keys that were being lost. In addition, technicians often had the wrong keys with them when they arrived on site which led to borrowing keys from each other. This made access management extremely challenging.
The solution
With the introduction of the iLOQ S50 battery-free and keyless smart-locking system, Cellnex now has complete control over who enters and leaves the base stations. Their own smartphones are the only keys technicians need to open the locks. Access rights can be granted, extended, and cancelled remotely, in real time and always in compliance with the law as needs change. Thanks to access logs, locking system administrators can keep track of where, when and by whom sites have been accessed.

Better key management
Key management is simple and flexible. When a technician stops working for the company, Cellnex can immediately remove their access rights. This significantly improves security, as they always know who has a key and when it is being used.
Reliable operation – reduced OPEX
iLOQ’s solution has no batteries to be replaced and it needs no electricity supply or mobile network. This reduces maintenance costs and ensures that the system always works reliably even in extreme weather conditions and equipment can be accessed in the event of a power cut.
Versatile access
Cellnex works with a wide range of customers. Different technicians have different access rights for different customers. Access rights can be remotely updated to technicians’ phones. This allows flexible and fast access to base stations, improving reliability and efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of travelling between sites and administration offices.
Traceability
Thanks to access logs, tracking the use of keys and by which technicians is easy and accurate.
