Smieberget Housing Cooperative
Maximum security with minimum administration
About the customer
Smieberget Housing Cooperative is one of the largest housing cooperatives in Western Norway. Spread out over a vast area, it consists of over 25 buildings with 569 apartments.
About the project
The housing cooperative, which dates back to the 1960s, has thousands of locks on all doors and also on the mailboxes. Many different locking solutions were in operation including the original patented mechanical locking system. With more than 50 years of operation, many keys had been lost by residents and contractors, reducing security over time, especially since the patent had expired.
The solution
The board of the housing cooperative decided to initiate the process of acquiring a new locking system and tested different suppliers and systems. They chose iLOQ’s solution, mainly due to its usability, and because it worked best with their complex locking environments. The old lock cylinders were replaced with iLOQ’s battery-free digital cylinders on both internal and external doors throughout the entire cooperative and iLOQ Online readers were also installed.
How the everyday life of Smieberget Housing Cooperative became easier
Easy and secure key management
With the new smart-locking system, if a key is lost, it can be quickly and easily blocked keeping security levels high. If the key is found, it can be conveniently reprogrammed and used again. Access rights can be updated as needs change and new keys created when necessary. The locking system administrator has full control over who has keys, and where and when locks and keys are used.
Reduced costs
The patent on the mechanical locking system had expired and it was costly to get keys and parts. iLOQ’s smart-locking system is 100% battery-free, avoiding costly purchases and the time it takes to change them and no annual service is needed. This saves the housing cooperative a lot of money and reduces impact on the environment.
Usability
iLOQ’s key is very simple; it works just like a mechanical key so there’s no need for training. The cylinders are robust and work reliably even in the harsh Bergen weather.
“With iLOQ, we always have control over how many keys are in circulation, who has the keys, and what permissions those keys have. If a resident loses a key, we can immediately block the key with the press of a button.”
