What are the major trends in access management?

In this blog post, we take a look at the access management arena as a whole, examine some of the major trends in the industry and demonstrate how iLOQ is already ahead of the game.

Strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region

According to research from market research specialists Trend Global Trackers, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to dominate the access management market in the coming years. This is primarily due to rapid industrialization and a growing focus on infrastructure development.

Luckily, iLOQ pre-empted this situation by establishing local operations in Australia in 2023, under the leadership of Mike Smits, and Singapore in 2024, with Christopher Tan at the helm. Together, they will bring iLOQ’s access management solutions to the wider Asia-Pacific region.

iLOQ has already developed partnerships with major customers in the region. Waveconn, an innovative developer and investor in Australian telecommunications infrastructure, is rolling out iLOQ’s battery-free and keyless mobile access sharing solution to ensure continuous secure, reliable, and auditable access management across its network. Our network of partners is growing fast, and we look forward to reporting more exciting news in the near future.

Smart-locking technology

With calls for more convenient, cost-effective, and efficient locking solutions, other significant trends include the rise in demand for smart locks with remote monitoring capabilities, industrial locks incorporating more sophisticated technologies and keyless access solutions.

Yet again, iLOQ is ahead of the game, and has been for decades. Our smart-locking solutions with audit trail functionality, make it possible to keep track of who has entered where and when. This helps to eliminate unauthorized access or help solve instances of misuse.

Our smartphone-based solutions make use of NFC technology to provide keyless access. Access rights are sent as ‘phone keys’ remotely and in real time to a smartphone running iLOQ’s app. Hold the phone against iLOQ’s lock, press one button and, if you have the correct access rights, you get smooth and secure access. Those access rights can be updated as needs change and immediately cancelled to keep security levels high, access management administration minimal, and lifecycle costs low.

Eco-friendly locking solutions

Additionally, the increasing trend toward sustainability is encouraging manufacturers to develop eco-friendly, energy-efficient lock systems.

iLOQ’s smart-locking solutions could be described as the most sustainable in the industry as they are entirely battery-free. With our digital key-based solutions, the power to recognize access rights and open locks is generated from the motion of pushing the key into the lock. With our smartphone-based solutions, the power comes from the NFC induction of the smartphone itself.

Our solutions save more than 250,000 kg of unrecyclable battery waste every year and also the environmental impact of travelling to change those batteries. And how about industries like critical infrastructure where hundreds of sites are based in remote locations? In the past, technicians would be travelling to and from administration offices to pick up and return keys. Now, they have all the access rights they need on their smartphone which not only eliminates excess travelling but also makes their working life more efficient. Not to mention the significant reductions in OPEX for the site owners and operators.

Ahead of the game

As an ambitious technology company, we are committed to maintaining and further building on our leadership position within the access management field. Our R&D efforts are concentrated on developing the software solutions powering our cloud-based SaaS offering. According to our 2023 Annual Report, two-thirds of our new recruits were in R&D and software development and we invest at least 10% of our turnover back into R&D. It is not enough to be ahead today – we want to be ahead tomorrow as well.
