Secure and battery-free access to multifamily property storage units

iLOQ joined forces with top-in-class dealers, Paragon Security & Locksmith, to safely and sustainably secure the access points to Bargold Storage Systems’ storage units within a large multifamily property in Queens, NY.

In multifamily properties that feature Bargold’s storage solution, the building’s management is responsible for providing each tenant in the complex with a key to the area that houses their individual storage unit. In addition to the large cost of purchasing and shipping these high-security keys, managing access is very complex. There are also security risks if keys are lost, stolen or unreturned at the end of the tenancy.

The search for an alternative to traditional mechanical keys had been on Bargold’s mind for a while, but technical issues limited their options. Bargold’s storage units are often located in the basement of buildings where, in many cases, as in this particular situation, there is no electricity, internet connection or access to Wi-Fi, making keyless entry unreliable and virtually a non-starter.

Understanding the requirements of the property, and as a new authorized iLOQ reseller, Paragon introduced Bargold to iLOQ’s battery-free and wireless solution which features the first lock cylinder to harvest operating energy directly from the NFC field generated by a smartphone for unlocking.

This innovation takes physical keys, batteries, excess wiring and internet connectivity out of the equation while maximizing security and ensuring zero maintenance. By recommending iLOQ, Bargold was offered a way to minimize lifecycle costs and eliminate battery waste. The solution provided their first viable opportunity to install a keyless solution.

Paragon’s design was for a full door replacement project with an iLOQ locking solution. As part of this project, Paragon furnished and cemented two custom fireproof doors and installed in each an iLOQ 1-1/8″ mortise cylinder with its ground-breaking, battery-free technology. Paragon then activated service and programmed individual ‘phone keys’ that are sent to iLOQ’s app running on the tenants’ smartphones.

With iLOQ’s keyless solution, Bargold is able to offer higher levels of security and simplified management of access rights along with the ability to cancel accounts whenever a tenant leaves. Being battery-free, iLOQ products contribute to the elimination of 230,000 pounds of unrecyclable battery waste every year, aligning with Paragon Security’s mission of providing cutting-edge, sustainable security solutions to residential and commercial customers across New York and New Jersey.
