Peterborough Regional Health Center (PRHC) is a regional acute-care hospital providing tertiary care to a population of 600,000 people, which includes the residents of Peterborough City and County, Northumberland, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton and three First Nations – Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Alderville.

PRHC had been using mechanical padlocks and keys to secure critical indoor caged lockers and outdoor buildings. Managing physical keys was challenging. It was time-consuming to keep track of who had access rights and where individual keys were. And, with no audit trails available, security risks were high. Adding readers and battery-powered digital locks would have incurred significant costs.
The solution
After strong recommendation from iLOQ’s authorized partner Ainsworth, PRHC decided to replace its mechanical padlocks with iLOQ’s battery- and cable-free and keyless mobile access solution where an NFC-enabled smartphone acts as both a key and a power source. Access rights are sent to iLOQ’s app; they are recognized, and the locks are opened using the NFC induction from the smartphone. The access rights can be updated and canceled as needs change. This has eliminated the problems associated with missing keys and improved overall access control. The audit trail functionality enhances security and accountability, and the entire solution seamlessly integrates into PRHC’s future Access Control platform.

Less key management
Managing access with iLOQ’s keyless solution is quicker and more secure than managing keys which can easily be lost or stolen. Access rights can be granted, updated and canceled using iLOQ’s software. Misuse is reduced and security levels remain high.
Live audit trails
iLOQ provides audit trails without the need for a large investment in infrastructure. PRHC has the assurance that their staff/contractors are carrying out their duties and, when they leave, the critical area is secured again.
Future integration into PRHC’s Access Control platform
This is a bonus for PRHC. An upgrade of their Access Control platform will allow seamless integration with iLOQ’s solution.
